Learning Community Applications 2012 - Application Questions

Depending on your selection of a Learning Community, Living-Learning Community, or Residential College, you will be asked to respond to several questions. We recommend preparing your responses to these questions ahead of time so that you will be able to take your time writing quality responses. The questions required by each LC/LLC/RC are listed below.

All LCs/LLCs/RCs

  • Please list any current language, math, or science courses you have completed in high school.
    Please note: This is not required, but it will be used in some learning communities for student registration & course advising only.

Learning Communities and Living-Learning Communities

  1. How will participating in this community help you reach your future goals?
  2. How will you contribute to this community?

Rites of Passage Learning Community

  1. What motivates you to attend college?
  2. What are some challenges that you think you will face in college?
  3. What are some strengths that you bring with you to college?
  4. Please describe if there were any times you had to study to get good grades prior to coming to UNCG.
  5. When do you feel that it is important to establish a relationship or meet with your college professor?
  6. Please describe if there are any circumstances that will influence you to avoid responding to an email.
  7. What is the main thing about the Rites of Passage program that interests you?

Ashby Residential College

Please respond to all of the following questions in order to demonstrate to the LLC Committee your interest in their community. The response boxes will expand to accomodate your entire response. In order for us to get the fullest sense of you, please provide detailed and well thought-out responses whenever possible. When put together, your responses to the essay questions should be at least two pages (double spaced) in length.

  1. How did you discover the Ashby Residential College (friend, website, etc.)
  2. Why are you interested in joining the Ashby Residential College? What aspects of our community appeal to you and why?
  3. Tell us what kind of roles you see yourself playing in a college community. How would you contribute to the Ashby Residential College and its learning opportunities?
  4. In ARC students have the opportunity and requirement to participate in at least one Ashby college committee. These committees are based on a wide variety of interests, and create a wide variety of events, activities, and outings. Look at the descriptions of the committees on our website (Link opens in a new window). Which committee(s) appeal(s) to you most? Why? Is there a committee you'd like to establish? If so, what would it be? What sort of activities would you create?
  5. Please list past and present extracurricular activities you participated in during high school or in your community. Choose one or two of these activities and tell us why they were important to you.
  6. What are your academic interests? What did you especially value about your high school, and what would you have changed? Why?
  7. Describe what attributes you would appreciate in a roommate.

Ashby PAX (Peace) Scholars

  1. 1. In approximately 500 words, explain your interest in the ARC PAX Scholars Community. What aspects of peace interest you, and are relevant to your area(s) of study, i.e. wellness, sustainability, global leadership, community engagement, human rights, to name a few.

Grogan Residential College

Please respond to all of the following questions in order to demonstrate to the LLC Committee your interest in their community. The response boxes will expand to accomodate your entire response. In order for us to get the fullest sense of you, please provide detailed and well thought-out responses whenever possible.

  1. What can you contribute to other students in an Interest Group that will benefit their academic, social, and/or personal success and make the community a valuable experience for all? (For example, any unique experiences, abilities, skills, knowledge, and personal characteristics that you possess).
  2. What benefits do you expect to get from being part of a Interest Group both academically (as a student), and personally (as an individual)?
  3. What are you like and what do you see as your best qualities as a person?
  4. Describe how you deal with challenges or disappointments (demanding assignments, time crunches, changes in plans and schedules, etc.).
  5. Describe any team situations you worked in. Describe how you related to others in that situation and tell how you contributed to the team's success.
  6. Each interest group is focused on a particular topic or theme and requires enrolling in particular courses about that topic or theme. So, tell us why you chose the particular Interest Group topics that you have selected on this application.
  7. List the clubs and other activities that you participated in during High School on a regular basis and explain your role in the activity.
  8. List 3 references that we may contact (at least one must be a teacher) and provide their phone and email information.

Strong Residential College

Strong College seeks to admit studenst who will be able to benefit from its programs and at the same time contribute to them. Typically, such students are academically serious, personally responsible, enthusiastic, self-motivated, and possessed of diverse interests and a desire to serve others.

Please answer the following questions. Your combined answers for all three questions should be at least one page and not more than two single-spaced pages. In order for us to get the fullest sense of you, please provide detailed and well-thought-out responses.

  1. In what ways do you expect your college experience to be different from your high school experience, academically, socially, or intellectually?
  2. Where did you grow up? What kind of a community was it (urban, rural, industrial, resort, etc.)? How did this place shape you and make you the person that you have become?
  3. What specific aspects of Strong College appeal to you the most? Why? What do you expect to get out of living in this particular community? What do you think you can contribute?
  4. Please choose one (1) of the following questions to answer. Your response should be approximately one page single spaced or two double-spaced; once again, we are trying to get a sense of who you are and what makes you tick.
    1. Have you ever read a book that changed you in some way? Describe the book and the effect that it produced. Do you think the author was trying to influence you as a reader?
    2. Social connections nowadays are shaped by electronic phenomena such as the enormously popular Facebook and MySpace. Do you use these forums to communicate with your friends? Do you see any drawbacks or negative effects of such social networks? Do you think they will last?
